The lab project will demonstrate the space where Big Nerd Energy roams free. The lab is the ultimate project. It is a project that will encompass my entire design career. Fundamentally, it will be a design-related journal and journey. I will be showcasing a variety of new software, skills, concepts, sketches, experiments, logos, motion graphics, research papers, published works, and even errors. There will be no real constraints for this project, only knowledge-building and sharing for insight. Over time, a vast collection will be built, primarily written and told from first-hand account/perspective, and I am confident it'll eventually crash this website!
The "A light within." project is the first step towards the grander lab project. The purpose of "A light within." is to highlight the importance of experimentation. This motion graphic was completed in a new program called TouchDesigner, a node-based visual programming language/tool developed by the Toronto-based company called Derivative. A program that I had no prior knowledge of, but within an hour, I was able to create a unique set of particle effects. It occurred to me that I could accomplish this even though I was in unfamiliar territory, strictly due to the knowledge and skills that I have gained. It certainly is not the first time I have seen the fruits of my labour. Still, the amount of time it took to quickly grasp the flow and understand it all was worth mentioning, as the lab project is fundamentally about experimentation, growth, and learning; this epiphany and moment will serve as a reminder for my journey through design. I am optimistic that not all will be so positive, as failure can also be an excellent teacher.
